“What in the hell is going on, Ben?” Steve paced in the kitchen as they waited for Stacey to come back downstairs.

“It’s not good. You need to calm down, Steve.” Ben drew in a deep breath and shoved his hands in his pockets to keep from hitting something.

Not one to normally have violent urges, Ben found himself fighting to remain in control. God knows someone needed to. Steve was going to go off the deep end when he told his brother what Evan had told him.

“Don’t tell me to calm down. I want to know what the whole damn sheriff’s department was doing at Stacey’s apartment. Why was she crying and shaking like a leaf?”

“Someone broke into her apartment while she and Kelly had gone to Dallas shopping.”

“I gathered that much, Ben.” Steve frowned at his brother. “What else?”

“Whoever it was trashed her bedroom and made a mess on her bed.”

Steve stilled. “What kind of mess?”

Ben pulled his hands out and ran one of them over his face. He was still trying to get past the crap. Telling Steve would be like adding jet fuel to a grill. Fuck!

“He piled her personal toys in the middle of the bed and masturbated over them—several times from what Evan said.”

“He what!” Steve shouted.

“Calm down. You’re going to get Stacey all upset again.”

“And she didn’t call us? I’ll turn her over my knee as soon as she gets back down here.” Steve’s hands were fisting at his sides.

“You’re not going to do anything to her but comfort her and let her know you’re here for her. She isn’t your sub anymore, Steve. Remember? You stepped away and left her high and dry.” Ben didn’t pull any punches. It was imperative that he get his brother back under control before Stacey walked in.

“She’s not going back to that apartment. She’s staying here with us from now on. We can keep her safe.”

“I’m with you, brother, but somehow I don’t think she’s going to agree with you.” Ben could already hear this argument turning into a fight.

“I don’t give a damn what she says. She’s not going back.”

Steve paced back and forth across the kitchen, mumbling under his breath. As much as Ben enjoyed knowing his brother was going to force or try to force Stacey to stay with them, he worried it wouldn’t turn out as he hoped, with her between them in the bed. This was a golden opportunity to make Steve see that they all three of them belonged together. Still, it could backfire on him, too.

“What else aren’t you telling me?” Steve had stopped pacing and was leaning against the island with his arms crossed.

“Evidently she’s gotten a few strange phone calls lately. She was going to report them when she got home, but she found the mess in her bedroom first. She got one while they were on their way back from Dallas.”

“And she went into her apartment alone. Hell! The man could have been waiting on her.
